Constantin A. (Alex) Solomonides, 90, of West Hartford, returned to his Creator on Tuesday (January 5, 2010).

Born in Port Said, Egypt on February 4, 1919, Alex was trained at the Teacher's College in Heliopolis, Cairo, and received a B.A. from the Greek Orthodox Seminary of the Patriarchate of Alexandria.

Upon graduation, the Patriarch appointed him as Treasurer, Pastor, and Administrator of the St. George Monastery Seminary in Cairo, where he served for seven years and authored two illustrated volumes on Christian Archeology.

As part of his continuous education, he also attended a number of international schools during this tenure, including L'Ecole Francaise de Droit, American University and Egyptian University. In 1948, Alex came to the U.S. to complete his education, attending the Hartford Seminary. He received a M.Th. in 1950 and a M.A. in religious education and social work in 1951.

Upon graduation, he taught Parochial School at St. George's Greek Orthodox Cathedral in Hartford and was subsequently appointed Superintendent of Parochial Schools in Connecticut by the Archdiocese of New York. In 1952, U.S. Sen. Brien McMahon and U.S. Rep. Abraham Ribicoff helped co-sponsor and pass S.1566 - Special legislation in the 82nd Congress regarding the permanent residency of Constantin A. Solomonides, as a result of his distinguished service to the community.

On June 28, 1952, President Harry S. Truman signed this bill into law, granting him permanent U.S. Citizenship. In 1958, Connecticut State Welfare Commissioner Christy Hanas recruited Alex to come work for his Department, where he worked as a Social Worker and Supervisor of Welfare Intake and Human Services for thirty-one years.

At his retirement in 1989, at the age of seventy, State Senator Cynthia Matthews, President Pro Tempore John Larson and the CT General Assembly honored him with a Special Citation for his many years of public service. Following his retirement, he continued to serve as a volunteer at the UConn Health Center for a number of years.

Alex is survived by his devoted wife of fifty-one years, Dorothea Kozmadis; his two sons, Michael A. Solomonides and his wife Karen of Farmington, and Jason B. Solomonides and his wife Kerry of Cromwell; his grandchildren Michael A. Jr. and Melissa M. Solomonides, and a host of nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his brother Michael Solomonides of Athens, Greece.
