She was born Dec. 7, 1907, in Wabaunsee, to Sherman and Mary B. Theirer Mertz. She attended Wabaunsee Grade School and graduated from Wamego High School in 1926. She attended a business college for two years and worked as a stenographer in Chicago and Los Angeles before she returned to Kansas. She was a secretary at Kansas State University in Manhattan from 1939 to 1943.
She was a member of First United Methodist Church in Wamego for 77 years and had been a member of Beecher Bible and Rifle Church in Wabaunsee.
She was a member of Wamego Chapter No. 76 of Order of the Eastern Star for 52 years. She was a member of the Wamego Historical Society, Columbian Theater Foundation, Senior Citizens and Country Club, both in Wamego, and the Concept Therapy Institute in Boerne, Texas.
She married Joseph T. Murphy in October 1943. They owned and operated Murphy's Sundries in Wamego for many years. He died in 1980.
Nephews and nieces survive.
Burial will be in Wamego City Cemetery.
Mrs. Murphy will lie in state after noon Wednesday at the funeral home, where visitation will be from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Columbian Theater or First United Methodist Church, both in Wamego, or to the organization of the donor's choice.
