Evelyn Joyce Yakel Dugan, 83, of Topeka, passed away Saturday, January 9, 2010.

She was born February 19, 1926 in Marion, KS, the daughter of Solomon David and Clara Maurie (Shahan) Yakel. As her father was involved in construction work she attended public schools in many Kansas communities including Arkansas City, Hillsboro, Marion, Belleville, Downs, Concordia, Herington, and Clay Center. She was a 1944 graduate of Clay Center High School where she was Valedictorian of her class. After high school she was employed at the Office of Price Administration and Rationing in Clay Center before attending college. She graduated with honors from Kansas State University with a degree in Home Economics and Extension in 1952. She held a membership in Phi Kappa Phi, an honorary scholastic society and Omicron Nu, an honorary Home Economics organization.

After raising a family of three children she attended Kaw Area Vocational- Technical School and became a Licensed Practical Nurse. She was employed by Stormont-Vail for several years and served as an instructor in the In-Service Training Department. She was employed by Urology Associations as an Office Nurse for six years. She also spent several years working at the Manor of Topeka care home.

She was a member of Seabrook United Church of Christ. She was Volunteer of the Year for Doorstep, Inc.

Evelyn married Dale Edwin Dugan on April 24, 1946 in Clay Center. He preceded her in death on March 5, 1998. She was also preceded in death by her parents, a son, Sgt. Alan Dale Dugan, U.S. Army, her daughter, Barbara A. Dugan Appelhans and her sister, Barbara Jane Yakel. Survivors include her son, Kent David Dugan, Topeka; and five grandchildren, Erin and Kayla Dugan, Lenore, Nick and Eric Appelhans.

Funeral services will be 9 a.m., Wednesday, January 13, 2010 at the Penwell-Gabel Mid-Town Chapel, 1321 SW 10th Ave, Topeka.

Interment will follow at Mt. Hope Cemetery, Topeka.

Mrs. Dugan will lie in state after 3 p.m., Tuesday at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to Doorstep, Inc., 1119 SW 10th Avenue, Topeka, KS 66604-1105.
