More information:
At age 18 Charles married Maria Fletcher in England and
they had 1 daughter, Eliza Ann in 1834. Charles & Maria separated, both claimed to be widowed. Charles immigrated to America in 1834, opened a medical office in Brooklyn, New York at 16 Attorney Street. Sometime thereafter he married Mary Ann Louzada, the widow of David Williams - Mary Ann had 1 daughter by David Williams. It is not known what happened to David. Charles & Mary Ann then had 5 children, son, Isaac, & daughters, Emeline, Elvira, Adelia, & Hannah.
There is a girl named Laura on one Census report, but she is the daughter of Mary Ann's daughter with
David & her real last name was Bishop (listed as Sell in error on the Census report).

Sometime after 1848 Charles & Mary Ann separated, from that point on Mary Ann listed herself as the 'Widow of Charles T.Sell. Charles returned to England & in August of 1849 married Julia Landon, (on his English marriage license he is listed as a 'druggist') - They both returned
to America & settled in Beaver Co., PA. where Charles opened a Drug Store &
Medical Practice. Charles' father, the Rev. John died in 1851, Charles & Julia returned to England briefly - Julia remained in England & called herself a
'Widow' - Charles returned to America & in 1853 was living in Van Wert Co., OH. where on Christmas Day, 1853 he married Caroline Rummel. They had 12 children (10 lived to adulthood). Both Charles & Caroline are buried in Mercer Co., OH. Charles died in 1882 & Caroline in 1892. Charles T. & Caroline lived in Ohio & Indiana during their marriage & Charles is listed as a Physician & Farmer in both locations.

Charles T. became a naturalized citizen in 1843 in New York & the witness was David Williams' brother,
Lamont Williams. Charles T. appears on his 1834 immigration records as a 'Surgeon'. It is believe he studied in Burmingham with his maternal grandfather, Dr. Charles T. Dawes. In those days Surgeons were apprenticed to elderly physicians & did not receive formal medical schooling.

In England in those days it was common practice for most people not to secure a divorce (unless they had lots of land
or money) - they would simply go to another Parish & contend they were a widow or widower and then remarry.

Another note:
Charles T Sell's Medical Office was in Manhattan at 16 Attorney St. (Lower East Side).
The 227 Leonard St Home was in Williamsburg area of Brooklyn in Kings Co. This was then refered to often as the "Eastern District" or "E.D."

Elvira Sell married 1st William Woodward and he died before 1874. She married 2nd Henry B. Simmons in Williamsburg on May 10 1874. Elvira died 27 Nov 1905 in Brooklyn. She is buried at Cypress Hills Cem with Henry and daughter, Emma Leticia Allen.
