Irene Hannah (Koenders) Mennenga, daughter of Theodore and Anna (Lenz) Koenders was born April 21, 1913 in Hamlin County near Castlewood, South Dakota.

She grew up there and graduated from Castlewood High School in 1931.

In her early years, she worked as a housekeeper and nanny for various neighbors.

After her marriage to John Mennenga on Feb. 29, 1940 at Maurice, Iowa, they farmed south of Castlewood for over twenty years before moving into Castlewood in 1965.

Irene was employed at Herbergers and Woolworths in Watertown for many years before retiring in 1975.

Until October 1990, she was employed by Interlakes Community Action as site coordinator for Castlewood.

She entered the Good Samaritan Center at Clear Lake on Nov. 21, 1991.

Irene died there on Tuesday, Dec. 24, 1991 at the age of 78 years, eight months and three days.

She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church where she taught Sunday School for a number of years and was a member of the Presbyterian Women's Group.
She was also a member of the South of Town Birthday Club, the Senior Citizens, Card Club, and the Royal Neighbors of America.She also played on and coached women's softball teams in Castlewood for many years.

She is survived by two sons, Dennis and his wife, Sharyl, of Watertown, and Leon and his wife, Jolene, of Tilden, Neb.; eight grandchildren; five great grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Irene was preceded in death by her husband, John, on August 19, 1986, her parents, and three brothers and three sisters.
