John Garwood, 42, died Tuesday, July 22, 2003 at Winneshiek County Memorial Hospital in Decorah after a courageous battle with cancer.

Funeral mass was Thursday, July 24 at 11 a.m. at St. Benedict Catholic Church with Rev. Gary F. Krapfl officiating.

Organist was Mary Beth Bouska, and soloist Clark Goltz sang "Taste and See" and "In This Very Room."

Congregational hymns were "Be Not Afraid," "Blest are They" and "On Eagle's Wings."

Casketbearers were Randy Peterson, Mike Soat, Craig Sullivan, John Waddle, Brian Beatty, Bob Burris, Kevin Locke and Larry Moen.

Interment was in St. Benedict Catholic Cemetery and Fjelstul Funeral Home of Decorah handled arrangements.

John Charles Garwood was born March 8, 1961 to Dale W. and Blanche V. (Bentrott) Garwood in Vinton.

He graduated from Vinton High School with the class of 1979 and graduated from Luther College with the class of 1983, with a degree in accounting.

He was united in marriage with Debra S. Stortz Aug. 11, 1984 at St Benedict Catholic Church in Decorah. They are the parents of three children: Samuel, Maleah and Zachary.

After their wedding they lived in Minneapolis, Minn., where John Garwood worked at Peat Marwick. Then they moved to Waterloo, where he worked at GMAC Mortgage Company.

John and Deb Garwood moved to Decorah in 1990 where he took a job as controller at Camcar Textron.

He is survived by his wife, Debra Garwood of Decorah; his three children, Samuel, Maleah and Zachary, at home; his mother, Blanche Garwood of Vinton; his sister, Jill (Lance) Grimm of Cedar Rapids and his father- and mother-in-law, Jerry and Ruth Stortz of Decorah.

John Charles Garwood was preceded in death by his father, Dale Garwood, on Sept. 12, 1998.
