My Earliest Memories by Violet Woelk
My earliest memories are of playing beneath the giant cottenwood trees. There was deep green shade and a swing.... playing with my sisters Ruby and Althea. A slab of concrete served as a small porch on the south side of the house that was off the kitchen door. There was a large pile of ashes a few feet away. A little further from the house was a rose garden. I remember only yellow roses, their soft brightness and fragrance. WE spent many evenings, my sisters, mother and I, in this setting. My memory holds very pleasant warmth as we waited for my father to come in from the fields. Fried potatoes were the main staple. I can smell them now and the chickens rushing to peck at the peels as they were thrown out. I remember every closet and window in the small five-room house. WE had a fairly large living room, a medium sized kitchen and three small bedrooms barely larger than the bed. There was not running water and no electricity, kerosene lamp was the only light and water pumped from a hand pump. By the pump was a large stock tank and nearby a cave for storing canned vegetables and cured meats. This cave was a place we used to while away the hours playing. It was sort of a playhouse with a pipe sticking up
from the roof. We dropped small rocks onto whoever happened to be down there. On the bottom step of the cave is where I gave my sister Ruby a very short irregular haircut. She had soft hair and very fair skin, large red cheeks, blue eyes. Althea was blond too. Atiny little girl with huge blue eyes. We lived near the bank of the Solomon River. We were taken to the river to splash and play on hot summer days but were warned never to go down there on our own. The water in the river was amber colored. Clean and sparkling about a foot deep.
