Born to German immigrant Jacob J. Weiss and Houston born mother Johanne Friedericke Koenig Weiss, August J. Weiss was their only child. On April 17, 1895, he married Maggie Schmidt in Houston's Erste Deutsche Evangelische Lutherische Kirche. August was a realtor. The family lived at 1702 McIlhenny Street in Houston.

August and Maggie had three children:
Daughter Weiss (1896 - 1896)
Carolyn "Carrie" A. Weiss Preston (1898-1982)
Jacob Henry Weiss (1899-1974)

He is buried in Forest Park Cemetery with his wife, Maggie Schmidt Weiss, his son, Jacob Henry Weiss, and his daughter in law, Rebecca Lewis Weiss.
