IRON RIVER-Ronald W. Upperstrom, 74, of 150 Ice Lake Road, died March 27 at the Iron County Community Hospital.
He was born July 27, 1930 in Republic, the son of the late Arvid and Marie (Sirtila) Upperstrom. He moved to Iron River as a child with his parents where he grew up and graduated from high school in 1948. He served in the U.S. Army in Germany during the Korean Conflict and following his honorable discharge in 1950, returned to Iron River. He worked for the Hanna Mining Company in their local mines and following a mining accident attended college where he obtained a degree in Accounting. He was employed as an accountant-comptroller for the Northwoods Hospital in Phelps, Wis. for 20 years until his retirement in 1995. In August of 1953 he married the former Joyce Maki. He was an avid Green Bay Packers fan as well as a NASCAR and Dale Earnhardt fan. He had been a former member of the VFW. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Fred and Allen and an infant brother Robert.
He is survived by his wife; two sons, James (Robin) of Delavan, Wis. and Kevin (Christina) of Iron River; two daughters, Rhonda (Mike) Brunswick and Cathy (Dale) Alessandrini, both of Iron Mountain; a special cousin Lavern Marlow of Iron River; 11 grandchildren, Michael and Stephanie Brunswick, Erica (Mitch) Taylor, Rhonda and Jackie Brey, Matt and Mario Alessandrini, Erick and Tyler Upperstrom, and Cory and Craig Upperstrom; and one great-granddaughter Erika Rose.
Visitation was held March 31 at the Langenberg Funeral Home-Iron River Chapel.
Funeral services were held March 31 at the funeral home with Pastor Dawn Treado-Green of the First Presbyterian Church in Iron River officiating. Members of the West Side Veterans Council accorded military rites at the funeral service.
Burial will be in the Resthaven Cemetery.
