He was a member of Colonel Dawalt's Indiana Rangers who chased the Indians after the Pigeon Roost Massacre. After a skirmish the group became separated. John and Thomas Thompson were together when they came upon some Indians and John was shot. Thomas carried him to a thicket and went in search of help. It was the next morning before John could be carried out on a pole stretcher. He was taken to Fort Vallonia where he died of his wound. The next day he was taken to Brock's fort/settlement and buried.
