She retired from teaching for good in 1989 and moved to Bountiful, Utah where her nephew Pat Gilmore lived. Earl died at their home in Bountiful in November 1993 of a fatal heart attack and Esther died of respiratory failure one week to the day after her 70th birthday in 1995.
She and Earl both willed their bodies to the University of Utah Medical School and her cremains are buried next to her parents and her sister, Dorothy Siemen Gilmore, in the Elizabeth City Cemetery.
