ANDERSON, Ind. – Rev. Edwin H. Helm, 77, of Anderson, and formerly of the LaPorte area, died Sunday, July 27, 2003, at his home following an extended illness.

He was born May 12, 1926, in New Castle, Ind., to A.E. and Mary Helm, and had lived in the northern and central Indiana area all his life.

Rev. Helm was a minister and ordained elder in the Northern Indiana Conference of the United Methodist Church. He was in the ministry for more than 50 years and was on the pastoral staff of New Horizons United Methodist Church in Anderson for the past 11 years. Churches he has pastored include West Shore Christian Fellowship in Muskegon, Mich., and Union Chapel Congregational Christian Church and United Methodist churches of Mt. Olive/Cammack, Williamsburg/Webster, Markleville/Mechanicsburg/Zion Chapel, Anderson Emmanuel, Monticello, Elkhart Simpson, Kendallville Faith, Tracy, and New Horizons.

Rev. Helm was a member of Anderson Noon Kiwanis Club, past president of Anderson Ministerial Association and founder and past board member of Contact Help in Monticello, Ind. He started the Summer Drive-In Worship in Monticello. He was a graduate of Ball State University and Christian Theological Seminary and was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II.

On July 15, 1951, in Wilkinson, Ind., he married Ruth Anna Walker, who survives.

Also surviving are one daughter, Lydia J. Nafpliotis of Marietta, Ga.; three sons, Rev. Mark D. of Lapel, Ind., Rev. Stephen D. of Jupiter, Fla., and Rev. Daniel M. of Mexico, Ind.; nine grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and one brother, Rev. Loran of Parker City, Ind.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one grandchild; and four brothers, Richard, Warren, Terrance, and his twin, Edward A.

The funeral will be Saturday at 10:30 a.m. at First United Methodist Church in Anderson with Revs. Steve Holdzkom and Marcus Blaising officiating. Friends may call Friday at Rozelle-Johnson Funeral Service, Anderson, from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m.; and Saturday at the church from 9:30 a.m. until the service. Burial will be in Union Cemetery, Randolph County, Ind., with military rites.

Former Monticello resident Rev. Edwin H. Helm, 77, of Anderson, died Sunday, July 27, 2003 at his home following an extended illness.

He was born in New Castle on May 12, 1926 to A.E. and Mary Helm.

He married Ruth Anna Walker on July 15, 1951 in Wilkinson. She survives.

He was a resident of central and northern Indiana for most of his life.

He was a graduate of Ball State University and of Christian Theological Seminary.

He was a U.S. Navy Veteran of W.W.II.

He was an ordained elder in the North Indiana Conference of the United Methodist Church. He was in the ministry for over 50 years and was on the pastoral staff of New Horizons United Methodist Church in Anderson for the past 11 years.

Churches pastored during his career include Monticello United Methodist Church and New Horizons United Methodist Church in Otterbein.

(Michael) Nafpliotis of Marietta, Ga.; a brother, Rev. Loran Helm of Parker City; nine grandchildren; two great grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.

He is preceded in death by a twin brother, Edward A. Helm; brothers, Richard Helm, Warren Helm, and Terrance Helm; a grandchild, Paul Christopher Helm.

Visitation will be from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. on Friday, August 1, 2003, at Rozelle-Johnson Funeral Service in Anderson and from 9:30-10:30 a.m., on August 2, 2003, at First United Methodist Church in Anderson.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, August 2, 2003, at the church, with Rev. Steve Holdzkom and Rev. Dr. Marcus Blaising officiating.

Burial will be at Union Cemetery in Randolph County. Military graveside rites will be conducted.
