Goldie Mitchell Price of Route 2, Ewing, will be buried today in the tiny Elizaville Cemetery in Fleming County, but her grave will not be where it was intended to be.
The cemetery plot originally designated for her is occupied by a large granite marker at the grave of her son, Franklin Runyon Sousley, perhaps Kentucky's greatest hero of World War II.
Sousley was one of the Marines pictured in the famous photograph of the American flag being raised atop Mount Suribachi on Iwo Jima on Feb. 23, 1945. Sousley, the second Marine from the left in the photograph, was killed in combat about a month after the photo was taken. He was 19.
Mrs. Price, who died Monday at 83, gave up her burial plot so the marker, dedicated about four years ago after a fund-raising drive, could be placed near her son's grave. Instead, she will be buried next to her second husband, Hensley Price.
"Momma, watch your papers. You might see my picture," Sousley wrote to his mother soon before his death, according to a 1983 Louisville Courier-Journal article.
Mrs. Price kept a copy of the photograph, recognized throughout the world, until her death. She also kept her son's letters.
"Anybody could mention his name and she'd be glad to talk about it," said Marie Arrasmith of Elizaville, a distant cousin.
Sousley initially was buried on Iwo Jima. His body was not moved to the states until several years later. His grave in Elizaville Cemetery was first marked with a standard Veterans Administration marker, measuring about 12 by 18 inches and flat on the ground.
In 1954, Mrs. Price went to Washington for the dedication of the monument in Arlington National Cemetery commemorating the flag raising.
Mrs. Price's first husband, Merle Sousley, died in 1934.
She is survived by a son, J.H. Price of Route 2, Ewing; a daughter, Janice Hamilton of Antioch, Ill.; two sisters; and several grandchildren and great- grandchildren.
Burial will follow the funeral, scheduled for 2 p.m. today at Price Brothers Funeral Home in Elizaville.
