"Death of Chris Rockemann-After an illness of a few days duration, Chris Rockemann, one of the most prominent and well-to-do farmers in Benton precinct, died at his home in the Long Branch neighborhood, Wednesday night, December 3. The deceased was born in the province of Friendwald, Minden, Prussia. April, 29, 1840, and was 63 years, 7 months and 3 days old at the time of his demise. Christian Rockemann was confirmed in the German Lutheran church, August 6, 1854, and during the same year he came to this coutnry with his parents. They located at Bellevue, Ia., and it was at this point that he was united in marriage to Lydia L. Marburger, April 21, 1864. In the same year he came to Benton precinct in this county and located becoming one of its first settlers. He purchased the present quarter section occupied as the family homestead for the sum of $1.25 per acre. By hard work and economy he acquired a comfortable forture and became one of the most prominent landowners in the county. He was noted as a stockraiser, paying especial attention to the raising of hogs, and he was one of several farmers who made a great deal of money out of this industry. He was a man who was noted for his probity of character,prizing his word as he did his good name and he was as honest as the day is long. His wife and nine children survive him as do also thirteen grandchildren."
