Iraqi Statesman. He served as the 3rd President of Iraq from April 16, 1966 to July 17, 1968. He also served as the 30th Prime Minister of Iraq from May 10, 1967 to July 10, 1967. He was a career soldier and supported the 1958 coup that toppled King Faisal II of Iraq. In 1963, he backed the coup that ousted Prime Minister Abd al-Karim Qasim and brought his brother Abdul Salam Arif to power. When his brother was killed in an aircraft crash in April of 1966, he was chosen to be president by the Iraqi Revolutionary Command Council. He would govern the country until July 17, 1968, when he was ousted by a group led by Ahmed Hassan al-Bakr. He immediately went to exile in Turkey, but returned to Iraq in 1979, when Saddam Hussein came to power. After the US-led invasion of Iraq in 2004, he went to live in Amman, Jordan.
