DECATUR - S. Walter Tick, 81, retired in Boynton Beach, Fla., formerly of Decatur, passed away Aug. 3, 2003, in Milwaukee, Wis.

Mr. Tick was born March 6, 1922, in Berlin, Germany. He immigrated with his immediate family to Decatur in 1939, fleeing Nazi persecution. Walter graduated from Decatur High School. At Millikin University, he earned a bachelor of science degree in chemistry. Later, he served in the Armed Forces' Intelligence Services in Europe during World War II and served in 1946 as part of the U.S. team investigating war crimes at the Nuremberg War Crimes Tribunals. During more than 50 years in Decatur, he served on numerous civic and business boards and was president and chairman of Kelly Food Products Inc. He served as president of Temple B'nai Abraham and taught in the Sunday school. He was president of the Decatur Jewish Federation and a national board member of the American Jewish Committee. He was an active member in the Decatur Rotary Club and served on the Metro Decatur Chamber of Commerce. He also was president of the Snack Food Association. In 1999, he was honored by the organization "Not in Our Town."

He is survived by his wife, Frona Tick of Boynton Beach; daughter, Hedy Tick of Kansas City, Mo.; sons, Marvin (Bobbie Tick) and Dr. David Tick (Lene Tick), both of Mequon, Wis.; grandchildren, Adriane, Ira, Alexander, Madeleine, Joshua and Nathalie.
