John came to the U.S. in the early 1850s and settled in Cincinnati, Ohio. From there he moved to Missouri. During the Civil War he enlisted in the Union army Cpl./Sgt. in Co. H, 27th Missouri Mounted Inf. Reg. on Sept. 23, 1861 at Otterville, Mo. Mustered out Feb. 15, 1862. Enlisted in Co. D, 7th Missouri State Militia Cav. Reg. Wounded Oct. 23,1864 at Big Blue, at the Battle of Westport, Missouri. After the war he married Elizabeth Jane Beaman Nov. 28, 1867 Bates Co. Mo. He was a charter member of the G.A.R, Post #274, Norwood, Mo. June 3, 1886. Came to Topeka, Kansas, Sept. 1896 where he rsided until his death.
