Buried at the Masonic Cemetery on Carter & South Henry Street in Farmington, John was the son of Jacob & Elizabeth Karsch born in Germany. The family came to the United States in 1854. At the age of 13 he became an apprentice to shoe making. By 1871 he started his own shoe manufacturing business in the Farmington area. On Jan. 2, 1868, he married Elizabeth Sarah Zimmer, also from a newly immigrated family from Germany. They had a total of 12 children, all survived to adulthood except Theresa Karsch who died at the age of 16. The other 11 are: Jacob Frederick Karsch, John W. Karsch, Mrs. Anna (nee Karsch) Klein, Miss Magdalene "Lena" Karsch, Miss Emma Karsch, Charles Karsch, Frederick M. Karsch, George Karsch, William A. Karsch, Edward Franklin Karsch, and William Adam Karsch.
