James Dean Volker died on Friday, March 28, 2003, while in flight, returning home from Illinois. He lived to reach the age of 44 years.

Funeral services for James Dean Volker of Elbow Lake will be held Wednesday, April 2, 2003 at 11:00 AM at Bethel Lutheran Church in Herman. Reverend Roger Rotvold will be officiating. Visitation will be held Tuesday, April 1, 2003, from 4 to 8 PM at the Pedersen Funeral Home in Morris and for one hour prior to services at the church on Wednesday. Burial will be at Lakeside Cemetery in Herman.

Serving as pallbearers for the service are: John Giese, Ron Volker, Joe Vipond, Rick Johnson, Mike Blume and Duane Amundson.

Kathy Rotvold will serve as organist for the service with Norman Bartells serving as soloist.

James Dean Volker, son of Bernard and Lenora (Kjnoress) Volker, was born June 10, 1958 in Morris, Minnesota. He was baptized and confirmed at Bethel Lutheran Church. He grew up in rural Herman and graduated from the Herman-Norcross High School in 1976. Following graduation, he farmed until he entered the United States Marine Corps, where he served from 1978 to 1982, including one year in Okinawa and was honorably discharged as a sergeant. He began flying and completing his private pilot licensure while serving in the Marines. After his discharge, Jim operated a small grain and dairy farm in rural Herman. On November 26, 1988, he was united in marriage to Candace Johnson. Jim farmed until 2001, when he obtained his commercial multi-engine and flight instructor ratings.

Jim was a member of Bethel Lutheran Church and the American Legion in Herman. Jim enjoyed flying, bowling, golfing, skiing and family activities when not enjoying his love of flying.

He is survived by his wife: Candace Volker of Elbow Lake; daughters: Glynis Volker and Olivia Volker both of Elbow Lake; his parents: Bernard and Lenora Volker of Herman; brothers: Gary (Linda) Volker of Herman, Dennis (Joann) Volker of Morris, Richard Volker of Alexandria and Ronald (Sherry) Volker of Herman; one sister: Joan (Richard) Carlson of Waconia; and many nieces, nephews.

Pedersen Funeral Home in Morris is in charge of the arrangements.
