Beloved mother, grandmother, great grandmother, and friend. June Spanner died peacefully holding her daughter Kathy's hand on Wednesday, February 24, 2010. She was 89. She formerly resided in Whitehouse Station and was a faithful member of Our Lady of Lourdes parish in town. She was born in Kansas City, Kansas on May 10, 1920 and moved to Elizabeth, NJ as a young girl where she was raised. June married Julius Spanner in 1944. He predeceased her in 1986. They had lived in Elizabeth, Watchung, and Bridgewater, NJ. She retired from Ethicon Inc. after 19 years. She was also predeceased by her brother, Louis E. Bleicker of San Jose, California, and parents, Louis Bleicker and Edythe Schaaf. June loved spending time with her family. She especially enjoyed sitting on the beach in Cape May, in the late afternoon, surrounded by her children and grandchildren. She was an avid cook, bird watcher, and crossword puzzle solver. Her family can attest to the many shared recipes and new bird sightings she reported. She loved participating in church activities and had many friends. She stayed in touch with many of her old friends throughout her life. June is survived by her sister, Bette Lou Pennington and husband Eual of Aptos, CA; daughter, Kathleen Griffith and husband Craig of Lake Charles, LA; two sons, Louis Spanner and wife Karen of Pittstown, NJ and Gregory Spanner and wife Ann of Williams Twp, PA; four grandchildren, Ami Payne of Marlton, NJ, Mark Spanner of Bethlehem Twp, NJ, Matthew Griffith of Erath, LA, and Katherine Griffith of Bali, Indonesia; and five great grandchildren, Ashlyn, Amanda, Autumn, Kelson, and Noah. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, March 6, 9:30 am at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church in Whitehouse Station, NJ. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Whitehouse Rescue Squad, Inc., P.O. Box 175, Whitehouse Station, NJ 08889, Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church, 390 Route 523, Whitehouse Station, NJ 08889, or the charity of ones choice.
