Irvin J. Becherer, 84, of Belleville, Ill., born Sept. 11, 1925, in Belleville, Ill., died Tuesday, Feb. 23, 2010, at Dammert Geriatric Center at the Shrine of Our Lady of the Snows, Belleville, Ill.

Mr. Becherer was a retired farmer and rural mail carrier. He was a member of the St. Clair County Farm Bureau and the National Rural Letter Carriers Association. He was also a member of St. Peter's Cathedral, Belleville, Ill. A World War II U.S. Army veteran, Irvin was a member of American Legion Smithton Post 937 and the Veterans of Foreign Wars. He was an avid St. Louis Cardinals baseball fan.

Irvin was preceded in death by his wife of 45 years, Johanna, nee Koerner, Becherer, whom he married on April 25, 1953, and who died Sept. 15, 1998; his parents, Leo and Louise, nee Beachle, Becherer; four brothers, Henry, Lawrence, Lester, and Herbert Becherer; two brothers-in-law, Hamilton Franke and Hilbert C. Fournie; a sister-in-law, Loretta Becherer; and a nephew, Steve Franke.

Surviving are his children, Ronald Becherer of Smithton, Ill., and Lou Ann (Steve) Petrucci of Bellevue, Wash.; three grandchildren, Ashley Becherer, Lucas Petrucci, and Aria Petrucci; two step-grandsons, Zachary Mohr, and Benjamin Mohr; a brother, Leander (Marcella) Becherer of Belleville, Ill.; four sisters, Elvira "Vera" Huling, Lillian Franke, and Adeline Fournie, all of Belleville, Ill., and Marcella (Robert) Stauder of Swansea, Ill.; two sisters-in-law, Carol Ann Becherer of Belleville, Ill., and Nora Becherer of Smithton, Ill.; and numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews.

The Becherer family wishes to express their sincere gratitude to the personnel at Dammert Geriatric Center, Hospice of Southern Illinois, and DaVita of Metro East for their loving care and concern.

Memorials may be made to Hospice of Southern Illinois.

Visitation: Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday, Feb. 26, 2010, at George Renner & Sons Funeral Home, Belleville, Ill. A prayer service will be held at 4 p.m. and an American Legion ritual at 7:30 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

Funeral: Funeral procession will leave at 9:45 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 27, 2010, from George Renner and Sons Funeral Home, Belleville, Ill., for a 10 a.m. Mass of Christian Burial at St. Peter's Cathedral Catholic Church, Belleville, Ill., with Father John Myler officiating. Burial with military honors will be held at St. John the Baptist Catholic Cemetery, Smithton, Ill.
