Great-grandson of John George Heidt, I, who arrived in Georgia in 1749.

Served in the Confederate Army, enlisted Sep. 1, 1862, Private. Fought in the Civil War, Company D and Company I, 25th Regiment, GA Infantry. After one large battle, possibly Gettysburg, he walked all the way back home to Savannah, mostly with bare feet.

Present on June 12, 1900 Census with his aunt Belinda "Lindy" (Heidt) Zittrauer's son, Franklin Reynolds Zittrauer and his family. A Georgia Health Officers Department Death Record shows a J.P. Heidt reported dead on Jan 4, 1905, died in Milledgeville, GA. James P. Heidt's brother George Marion Heidt lived in Milledgevills for some number of years. The death record shows his age at death as 52, but this should have been 72. All of the J. Heidts who were born anywhere near 1853 have documented death dates no where near 1905, so this death record must have been James P. Heidt, and someone reporting the death read his age incorrectly as 52, instead of 72. Hand written 5's and 7's of the 1700's and 1800's are notorious for being mistaken for one another. No burial information that has been located at this time. James' only wife Sophia is buried at Zion Lutheran Church Cemetery in a marked grave, and while we believed James was there with her, in an unmarked grave, it seems that all the graves near her are marked and definitely not him. So he may be buried in an as yet unestablished grave in or near Milledgeville, GA.
