On 26 Feb 1949 LUCKY LADY II, a Boing B-50A Superfortress bomber commanded and piloted by Melrose, MN native Capt. James Gallagher, lifted off from Carswell Air Force Base, Fort Worth, Texas. It carried a larger than normal crew who would make a 4 day flight without touching down until they had been around the world and back to Texas. The plane was loaded with Supplies and food for the long distance flight: however would have to make 4 airborne refueling rendezvous with AF Tankers. Total air time was 78 hrs 54 min with an average speed of 249 miles-per-hr.

Col.Gallagher retired from the Air Force in 1972 as a Vice Wing Commander. In 1984 he received the Jimmy DOOLITTLE Award for his Circumnavigation flight.
