When she was born, her mother's husband Roger Palmer claimed paternity, King Charles II admitted paternity, but as she grew older everyone at court was struck by her likeness to Philip Stanhope, Earl of Chesterfield. She was aged only 12 at marriage in 1674; the dowry of £20000 promised by the king was never paid.
