She was the illegitimate daughter of Charles II and Lady Castlemaine, who was married to the 8th Baron Teynham.
When she was born, her mother's husband Roger Palmer claimed paternity, King Charles II admitted paternity, but as she grew older everyone at court was struck by her likeness to Philip Stanhope, Earl of Chesterfield. She was aged only 12 at marriage in 1674; the dowry of £20000 promised by the king was never paid.
Her husband Thomas Lennard, 15th Baron Dacre, was later created Earl of Sussex. (info by Hugh Casement)
