Marcus Jr's parents were Marcus Otte Sr. and Louise "Lizzie" Ehlers. They first farmed in Chalco, NE; then purchased a large parcel of land (abt. 200 acres) in Elkhorn, NE and built an almost identical large farmhouse to accommodate their 10 children. After their marriage in 1921, Laura and Marcus, Jr. lived and farmed there. Around 1935 Marcus received the end of a kick from a mule to his head. He suffered lockjaw, was hospitalized many months. He attempted to continue farming but endured excrutiating pain. After Marcus, Jr. died in 1936, Laura stayed on the farm 3 years. The farm was then sold by Marcus' mother Louise "lizzie" on October 6, 1939 for $14,000 ($70/acre). Robert noted in later years that this was a "steal" because a few years later when the economy was high it could have brought more money. Marcus Otte and Rudy Otte (Mabel Bartel's husband) were brothers, so Rudy was also his brother Marcus' nephew.
