Death of Carl Witthuhn

Carl Witthuhn was born Aug. 22, 1837 in Rothenburg, Province Brandenburg, Prussia. April 8, 1865 he was married to Frederike Schmidt, of Templien, Province Brandenburg, Prussia. They came to the United States in 1870 and settled at Steamboat Rock, Iowa, residing there eight years. In 1878 they came to Kossuth county and settled on the old Tinker farm making it their home for a year. Then they moved over into Minnesota on their farm three miles east of Elmore where Mr. Witthuhn resided until moving into the village ten years ago.

Eight children were born to them, seven of whom are living, six sons and one daughter: Gustave who resides in Canada; Amelia (Mrs. E.L. Brocker) of this place; Charles of Blue Earth; Fred of Arcola, Canada; Ernest of Blue Earth; Richard who makes his home with E.L. Brocker on the farm, and W.L. of Northport, Wash.

Mrs. Witthuhn died Dec. 27, 1886, while they were residing on the farm east of town. On Dec. 23, 1887, Mr. Witthuhn was married again to Mrs. Augusta Meyer, nee Arendsee, in Springfield, Marquette Co., Wis. Both of his marriages were very happy ones. Mrs. Witthuhn has six children living from her first marriage: Mrs. C.F. Henkel of this place, Paul Meyer of Blue Earth, Rudolph Meyer of Elmore, Mrs. L.J. Levenick of Darwin, Minn., Mrs. Gustav Witthuhn of Arcola, Canada, and Arthur Meyer of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.

Mr. Witthuhn died July 11, at 10 a.m. at the age of 70 years, 10 months and 19 days. He had been sick with dropsy for the past two years but was not confined to his bed until six weeks ago. The only children present at the bedside when the end came was Richard Witthuhn and Mrs. E.L. Brocker of this place.

Relatives present at the funeral were: Charley, Ernest and Richard Witthuhn and Mrs. E.L. Brocker and their respective families; Paul Meyer and family, Mrs. Rudolph Meyer of Aberdeen, S.D. and Mrs. C.F. Henkel and family, and one brother, William Witthuhn of Hubbard, Iowa. One other brother from Nebraska, and Gust and Fred Witthuhn of Canada, W.L. Witthuhn of Washington could not be present.

The funeral was held Tuesday. Rev. Langlotz of Hopkins conducted services at the home in German and Rev. Utzinger preached in English at the German Evangelical church, choosing the 23d Psalm as a text. The deceased was a shepherd by occupation for many years in the old country and he selected this text himself and also two of the songs. Rev. Langlotz spoke in German. Rev. Judes assisted with the music.
