Dr. Carl E. Johnson, 90, died Saturday, March 6, 2010. Carl was born November 13, 1919, to Carl J. Johnson and Gerda (Johnson) Johnson in Chicago, Ill.

Doctor Johnson received the degrees of B.S. (1942), Wheaton College; and M.D. (1945), Northwestern University. He interned at Cook County Hospital, Chicago (1945-1946), and served a residency at the U.S. Navy Veterans Hospital, Albuquerque (1946-1948). Doctor Johnson entered the Mayo Graduate School of Medicine in 1948 and received the M.S. degree in obstetrics from the University of Minnesota in 1951. He was appointed a Mayo consultant in obstetrics and gynecology in 1952. He advanced through the academic ranks to become associate professor in the Mayo Graduate School of Medicine in 1971 and the Mayo Medical School in 1973. He has been active and received honors in a number of professional associations. He was president of the J. E. Fitzgerald Obstetrics & Gynecology Society. Doctor Johnson retired from Mayo Clinic in December 1988.

Carl was a radio and electronics enthusiast and has held an FCC amateur radio license for 76 years. Carl was a lifelong swimmer and diver. He loved fishing and the serenity of his cabin on the Mississippi River. He was a member of Autumn Ridge Church.

Carl is survived by his wife, Irene, Rochester; two daughters, Carolyn (Gary)Benson, Rochester, and Gail (Erik) Ibele, Madison, Wis.; and a son, Carl Johnson, Sarasota, Fla.; four grandchildren, Anthony (Jennifer) Benson, John E. Benson, Christoph Ibele and Karin Ibele; and two great-grandchildren, Caden and Brady Benson. He was preceded in death by his parents.

AFuneral Service will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, March 12, 2010, at Autumn Ridge Church. Visitation will be from 4:30 p.m. to 6 p.m. on Thursday, March 11, 2010, at Ranfranz and Vine Funeral Home, and one hour before the service at the church. Burial will be in Oakwood Cemetery at 1:30 p.m. on Friday, March 12, 2010.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to the Autumn Ridge Church-the Center or Salvation Army.
