Joseph Henry Gerig donated 80 acres for the support of Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Avoca, NE. It was built in 1884 and cost $2,000.00, according to the parish history written in 1937 on the occasion of the parish's 50th anniversary. Joseph Henry Gerig died before the church was completed, and was the first person buried behind it . Subsequently the church cemetery was laid out around his grave. The new bell, still in its packing crate, was first rung at his funeral, and his name is enshrined on a marble plaque in the church.

The church and cemetery occupy only a small portion of the land. As of this writing, Holy Trinity is attached as a mission to the parish of St. Paulinus, P.O. Box C, Syracuse, NE 68446. The pastor is Father Mike Stec (402-269-3382). The church records are kept in Syracuse, and document the baptisms, weddings and funerals of the early Schneiders, Hanlons, Gerigs and Straubs.

The income generated supports the church. Consequently, even though the town now consists of only a bar and a post office and there is no other community near the church, it stands alone and proud on the Nebraska prairie, an enduring monument to Gerig's faith.

From documents received over this past weekend, it appears that Joseph Henry Gerig was known as Henry. He was formerly in a monastery, perhaps in Atchison, KS, before leaving the monastery and going to Nebraska City, where he assisted in the construction of St. Benedict's Catholic Church.
