George Ernst Gerdes

George Ernst Gerdes, son of Adolph and Martha Gerdes, was born in Sengwarden Oldenburg, Germany, November 18, 1901, and departed this life at the Mary Lanning hospital (sic) at Hastings, Nebraska, on October 6, 1950, at the age of 48 years, ten months and 18 days after an extended illness.

The early years of his life were spent in Germany where he attended Business School and was a dairy inspector until 1923 when he came to America and made his home with the Fred Kuper family at Nelson, Nebraska.

On December 23, 1925, he was united in marriage to Clara Marie Smith at Nelson, Nebraska. To this union were born two children, one daughter and one son.

The first year of their married life they resided on a farm in Nuckolls county (sic), Nebraska and later moved to the community north of Edgar where he continued farming until the year 1943 when he moved to their home in Edgar where his family now resides.

In addition to his farming he operated a dairy for a short time and later was employed at the Harvard Air Base. In 1946 he established the Gerdes Implement Company and was active in this business until the time of his death.

Mr. Gerdes was a patient loving husband and father and will be well remembered by a host of relatives and friends.

He was a member of the Lutheran church, being confirmed at the age of 14 years.

He leaves to mourn his passing his devoted wife, Clara, of Edgar; his son, Marvin; his daughter, Golda, of Hastings, Nebraska; his mother, Martha Gerdes, and one sister, Magda Wilkens, both of De*mold, Germany, one brother, Albert Gerdes of Elba, Nebraska, and a number of other relatives and a host of friends.

His father, one brother and one sister, all of whom were living in Germany, preceded him in death.

A charming circle broken and a dear face will be missed, one sweet welcomed voice hushed; no father to meet us at the door and the one we loved is missed and in the home his place unfilled is desolate. But the home beyond where he has gone, the home where separation cannot be, is a beautiful home in heaven.

Funeral services were held Sunday, October 8, 1950, at 2:30 p.m., in the Christian church in charge of Rev. E. E. Smith. A quartette Mesdames F. W. Hockman and Tom Shaw and Messrs. M. R. Stovall and A. A. Recht sang "Sometime We'll Understand" and "No Night There." Mrs. Cecil Keeney was at the piano.

Casket bearers were: Ralph Wilson, Ralph Mileger, P. C. Burge, Ed. Bussell, Floyd Kollman and Fred Gass.

Interment was in the Edgar cemetery (sic).
