Corporal, 3rd Battalion, Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry, based at CFB Edmonton. He had deployed with the Canadian contingent of NATO forces serving in Afghanistan.

Surrounded by family and friends, Cpl Fitzpatrick died at the University of Alberta Hospital as a result of wounds he sustained two weeks earlier in Afghanistan. He was critically injured by an improvised explosive device during a joint Canadian/Afghan foot patrol 25 km west of Kandahar City in Zhari district on March 6, 2010. After the explosion, he was treated at the Kandahar airfield hospital, then moved to Landstuhl Regional Medical Centre in Germany before being flown to Edmonton.

Aged 21, he was from Prince George, British Columbia. He joined the military in 2006 and proved to be an excellent shot while in basic training. "Fitz" deployed in October 2009 on his first operational tour of duty. Colleagues remember him as honest and straight-forward, a bit of a jokester who loved a good laugh. He was also known for his love of the outdoors, target shooting, archery, football and snowboarding.

He received the General Campaign Star – South-West Asia (GCS-SWA).

Cpl Fitzpatrick is survived by his parents James and Colleen, brothers Michael and Sean, large extended family and many friends. His family said, "Darren will be missed terribly by his family, friends and many people who loved him and were fortunate enough to have known him in this life. Despite our grief, we are immensely proud of Darren as such an incredible young man."

Funeral with military honours was held on March 27, 2010 at St. Joseph's Basilica in Edmonton. Interment service held on
March 30, 2010 in Prince George.

Canada has lost 141 service personnel since the Afghanistan mission began in 2002. One diplomat, a journalist and two aid workers have also died.
