Joseph A. Zarda, Basehor, KS (formerly of Shawnee, KS), passed away Thursday, August 7, 2003, at the Veterans Administration Hospital, Leavenworth, KS. Mass of Christian Burial will be 10 a.m. Saturday, August 9, at the St. Joseph Catholic Church. Burial in the St. Joseph Cemetery. Friends may call from 4:30-8 p.m. Friday at the Amos Family Chapel of Shawnee, where Rosary recitation will be at 5 p.m. and 7 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions to Invest in the Future, c/o St. Joseph Catholic Church, 5832 King, Shawnee, KS 66203.

Joe was born December 19, 1925 on his family's farm in the Merriam, KS area, to Joseph and Mary (Salzinger) Zarda. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army in the European Theatre during the Korean Conflict. Joe was involved in the Zarda Dairy business for many years. Joe was an active member of the American Legion Post 327, a 50 year member of the Shawnee Council Knights of Columbus, and a 4th degree member of the Bishop Ward Assembly. He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, James and Edward Zarda, and one sister, Mary Zarda Hendrix. Survivors include two brothers, Ben Zarda and his wife, Betty and Thomas Zarda and his wife, Mickey, all of Shawnee, KS; two sisters, Helen Zarda, Overland Park, KS and Florence Zarda Orr, Roeland Park, KS. He also leaves his God given children, whose mother is Jayne Rivera of San Antonio, TX; Regina Cansler, San Antonio, TX, Millard Wheeler and wife, Mindy, Elm Mott, TX, Debbi Blake and her husband, Jim, Shawnee, KS and Pam Smith and her husband, Doug, Arlington, TX; eight grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
