Edmund H. Eckart, 80, of Hecker, Ill., born July 21, 1925, in Prairie du Long Township, Ill., died Sunday, June 25, 2006, in Belleville, Ill.

A beloved family man, Mr. Eckart left behind a legacy of friendship, love and truth to his wife of 56 years. He was a great provider and giver to his children.

His life was dedicated to his family. He was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, uncle and cousin. Eddie spent his long-life with hard work, dedicated to community services.

He was a farmer all of his life and a hod carrier for 38 years and retired from M.L. Vasquez. After retirement he worked as head of maintenance for the Village of Hecker. His community involvement included: retired from Hecker Volunteer Fire Department with a number of years serving as assistant chief, charter member of Hecker Sportsman Club, secretary of St. Augustine Holy Name Society, lifetime member of Hecker Community Center, member of NuDeal and Millstadt Horshoe Leagues. His love of horseshoes involved hosting Illinois State Horseshoe Tournament in Hecker for three years. He was a member of St. Augustine Catholic Church, Hecker, Ill.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Adam and Emma, nee Birkner, Eckart; a sister, Emma Haudrich; a brother-in-law, Cyril Haudrich; a sister-in-law, Marie Eckart; mother-in-law and father-in-law, Edward and Mathilda, nee Maurer, Kreher; sons-in-law, William Happel and Dale Griffin; daughter-in-law, Georgia, nee Castens, Eckart.

Surviving are his wife, Esther E., nee Kreher, Eckart of Hecker, Ill.; his children, Ralph (Kathy) Eckart of New Athens, Ill., Melba "Jeannie" Happel of Hecker, Ill., Mary (Larry) Schaltenbrand of Smithton, Ill., Edmund G. "Eddie" Eckart of Chester, Ill., Marvin (Sandy) Eckart of Red Bud, Ill., Geri Griffin of New Athens, Ill., Lori (Andy) Amann of Waterloo, Ill., Arnold (Angie) Eckart of Hecker, Ill., and Theresa (Jim) Stearns of Columbia, Ill.; 23 grandchildren; 6 great-grandchildren; a brother, Ervin (Irene) Eckart of Waterloo, Ill.; sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law, nieces, nephews and cousins.

Memorials may be made to the donor's choice.

Visitation: Friends may call from 3 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, June 27, 2006, and from 8 to 9:15 a.m. Wednesday, June 28, 2006, at Quernheim Funeral Home, Waterloo, Ill. The Hecker Fire Department will conduct a walk through at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

Funeral: Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, June 28, 2006, at St. Augustine Catholic Church, Hecker, Ill., with the Rev. Ralph Haas officiating. Interment will be in St. Augustine Cemetery, Hecker, Ill.
