Daniel Kerst Rettew was the 7th child of 14 children (11 lived past infancy), of Elijah Bull Rettew and Elizabeth Jane Weidensaul Rettew of Morgantown, PA.
Daniel, or D. K. Rettew, as he was called, was first a Laborer and then had a grocery and produce store. He is listed in the 1892 Borough of Columbia, PA Directory as D.K. Rettew Groceries and Provisions 540 Walnut Street, Columbia PA The home was at that address and the store was nearby on the same street.
He met and married Catharine Chalfant Rettew December 16, 1874. They had 8 children, 6 lived past infancy:Rebecca Bull Rettew Bletz, Charles Raymond Rettew, Irene Ella Rettew Beittel, Daniel Chalfant Rettew, Chester Elijah Rettew, Catharine Grace Rettew Swam.
He was very active in the community and was a founding member of the Columbia, PA Y.M.C.A., a member of the Building Committee for the Columbia United Brethren Church, and a member of the Centennial Celebration Committee for the Borough of Columbia, PA.
On Sep 13, 1889 he was elected Select Commander for the Knights of the Mystic Chain.*

*"The Ancient Order of the Knights of the Mystic Chain was a group founded in 1871 in the traditions of King Arthur and Knights of the Round Table. Amongst the founders were Freemasons and Knights of Pythias. Some of the characteristics of this order can be traced to these two groups. The initiation rituals had the candidate placed on a metal plate and instructed to take an object out of a bowl of water. At that time an electric shock was put through the candidate. In 1889 the order started to work in insurance. However, it never grew larger. At the top it had around 40,000 members. It disappeared in the first half of the 20th Century."
