AUSTIN ALLEN DIES HERE OF TYPHOID

Three Weeks' Illness Causes Architect's Death - Was Member of American Olympic Team

Austin Allen, 36 years old, a widely known architect of the district, died from typhoid fever in St. John's Hospital at 7:50 o'clock yesterday morning after an illness of three weeks. His condition became critical a week ago and he was removed to the hospital.

Mr. Allen was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, August 8, 1881. With his parents, Mr. & Mrs. J.W. Allen, he came to Joplin in 1891. He entered high school here in 1894 and was graduated from that institution. The next year he entered Pennsylvania University from which he was graduated in 1902. He was prominent in athletics while in school and during the summer following his graduation was a member of the American Olympic athletic team which entered a meet in Europe. Following the track meet Mr. Allen toured part of Europe and spent some time in the study of architecture in Paris. Upon his return to America he became associated with Bruce Price, a leading architect of New York. In 1905 he returned to Joplin and opened offices. He also maintained offices in Kansas City.

Among the buildings which Mr. Allen has erected in Joplin are:
*The Olivia Apartments
*The Elks' Club
*Newman's Department Store
*Joplin Theater
*Several ward schools and numerous residences.
At the time of his death he was associated with the firm of Smith, Rea & Lovitt of Kansas City in the construction of a new high school building here.


Ten years ago Mr. Allen was married to Miss Belle Taylor. Three children were born to them.

Mr. & Mrs. Allen lived at No. 901 East Forty-Seventh Street in Kansas City. Mr. Allen has been in Joplin during her husband's illness.

Mr. Allen was a member of the American Institute of Architects and represented that organization as a delegate to the national convention in Minneapolis last November.

He is survived by his parents,
Mr. and Mrs. J.W. Allen, No. 419 Moffet Ave
Three sisters;
Anna, Marion & Agnes Allen, who live with their parents, his widow and 3 children.

Funeral services will be held in the residence of his parents at noon tomorrow. The Rev. Henry N. Hyde, rector of St. Phillips Episcopal Church will officiate. Burial will be in Mount Hope Cemetery.
