Obituary:
Mrs. John Friederich (Adele Wilhelmine) Gerdes died in her home near Humboldt Friday evening, Feb. 15, 1963. She had been in failing health for a year, and was hospitalized twise during 1962. She reached the age of 68 years, seven months and 24 days.
Born June 22, 1894, on a farm near Febing in the Stone Church community southeast of Johnson, she was one of seven children in the family of Gerd and Caroline (Holthus) Behrends. She was baptized in the Lutheran faith by Rev. Dirks July 13, 1894 in St. John's Lutheran (Stone) Church. Her confirmation by Rev. Dirks was on April 12, 1908 in the same church. She obtained her education in a rural school near her home.
She was married Jan. 24, 1918 to Mr. Gerdes in the Stone Church. 8 children were born to them. Her entire life was spent in Nemaha County, with the exception of the past six years when she lived in Richardson County near Humboldt. She transferred her church membership four years ago to the St.James Lutheran Church of the Long Branch community, where she was also a member of the Women of the Church.
Preceding in her death were her parents; a son who was killed in WWII; a brother; a sister and a granddaughter.
Survivors are her husband; three daughters, Mrs. Orval (Ora) Behrends of Johnson, Mrs. Alvin (Maxine) Behrends of Auburn, and Mrs. Harvey (Della) Bergmann of Beatrice, Ne. four sons, LaVern J. Gerdes and Lloyd E. Gerdes of Auburn.Raymond F. Gerdes of Humboldt and Arnold M. Gerdes of River Falls, WI; two brothers, John D. Behrends of Auburn and Martin Behrends of Johnson; two sisters, Mrs. John Hector and Mrs. John Hafermann of Auburn; and 28 grandchildren.
Funeral was held in the St. James Lutheran church. Rev. August Blobaum pastor of the church officiated.
Mrs. Fred Plager was the organist. assisting with flowerw were Mmes. Fred Boeck, Emma Casey and Henry Alberts. The pallbearers were Glen Mueller, Donald Behrends and Richard Behrends of Auburn, Vernie Mueller of Tecumseh, William Hafermann of Johnson and Rudolph Mueller of Stella, Burial was in St. James Lutheran Cemetery.
