Paul Joseph Strittmatter was born July 12, 1946, to Bernard and Rosemary
(Muelhaupt) Strittmatter in Des Moines, Iowa. He received his Bachelor's &
Master's degrees from St. Louis University in St. Louis Missouri. He then went
on and received a Master's of Divinity degree from the Jesuit School of Theology
in Berkeley, California; and a Master's degree in health administration from the
University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, Michigan. Father Strittmatter served as
citywide chaplain in Des Moines, Iowa, for a year before becoming a counselor at
Creighton University Dental School. He also was administrator of Creighton's
OB/GYN Medical School. Father Paul was pastor at St. Francis Indian Mission in
Rosebud, South Dakota from 1984 to 1997 and then returned to Des Moines to be
the assistant pastor at St. Ambrose Cathedral. He was on loan to the Diocese of
Des Moines and in July from 1998 until his death he served St. Patrick Parish in
Dunlap and Sacred Heart Parish in Woodbine. Most recently Holy Family Parish in
Mondamin was added to Father Paul's responsibilities.
Father Paul loved life and loved the people of his communities he served. The
Rosebud Indian Reservation was near to his heart as he made many trips there to
see friends and to help in any way he could. He has been involved with Christian
Life Communities and Teens Encounter Christ, as well as the Des Moines
Presbyterial Council. He was also a member and Chaplain of the Knights of
Columbus #1249 in Dunlap and #0277 Luke Hart Assembly 4th Degree. This is the
highest patriotic degree in the KC's. He enjoyed reading and collecting prints
of paintings by Johannes Vermeer.
Father Paul died Tuesday, March 30, 2010, at the Jesuit Residence on the
Creighton Campus in Omaha, Nebraska at the age of 63 years, eight months and 18
days.
Father Paul was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his two
brothers, Bernard (Mary) Strittmatter of Port Arthur, Texas, Michael (Anna)
Strittmatter of Los Gatos, California; three sisters, Barbara (Harlan) Seagren
of Garland, Texas, Catherine Jewel (Jay Taylor) of Georgetown, Texas, Beth (Tom)
Clark-Gobich of San Jose, California; and many other nieces, nephews, relatives
and friends.
