Claus Ehlers was born in Holstein, Germany in 1863 and came to America with his parents at a young age. The family settled in Scott County, Iowa near Clinton.

As a young man, Claus moved to Northern Tama County, Iowa to a farm he purchased one-half mile east of Dinsdale, Iowa. He married Ida Flatterich who at the time worked as a hired girl for the elder James Dinsdale. Claus and Ida were married on April 11, 1889.

Their six children are: Paulina, Clarence, Edwin, Orlyn, Rufus and one son who died in infancy.

Both Claus and Ida are buried in the Reinbeck Cemetery, Reinbeck, Iowa.
