Forty Five Years Ago (1901)
Bernard Minton, Sr., "one of Alton's most substantial and highly esteemed citizens", died at his home at the age of 66. Born near Cologne on the Rhine in 1834, he came to America with his parents in 1854 and grew to manhood near Milwaukee, Wisconsin. In 1853 with Joseph Umhoefer and five others he went to the gold fields of Australia but returned in nine months after many hardships. He came to Alton with his family in 1887. He is survived by 8 children.
