The son of John L. Burkholder and the husband of Sarah Lucy (Huff) Burkholder, whom he married March 24, 1870, in Vancluse, Frederick County, Virginia. Children: Anna Mary (b. 03/13/71), Mattie Richard (b. 03/07/72), John H. (b. 05/25/76), Sarah Elizabeth (b. 12/19/77 - married a Merkling), Katie M. (04/19/80 - married John Chapman), and Barton (b. 10/14/87). In 1860, he was a blacksmith living in Fawn Township, York County, Pennsylvania. He stood 6' 0" tall and had black hair and dark eyes.

A Civil War veteran, he enlisted in Lower Chanceford Township, York County, August 7, 1862, and mustered into federal service at Harrisburg August 9 as a private with Co. I, 130th Pennsylvania Infantry. Honorably discharged with his company on May 21, 1863. He then enlisted in Harrisburg July 6, 1863, and mustered into federal service there the following day with Co. A, 21st Pennsylvania Cavalry (182nd Pa), at the rank of sergeant. He re-enlisted in Chambersburg January 4, 1864, with the 3-year organization. Promoted to commissary sergeant February 21, 1864, and to quartermaster sergeant May 1, 1864. Wounded in the right temple at Bellefield, Virginia, December 10, 1864, leaving a "T-shaped scar." Honorably discharged with his company on July 8, 1865.
