Jos. V. Lawrence Vice-President Biloxi Bank Dies

Joseph V. Lawrence, Sr, 85, vice president of the Peoples Bank, Biloxi, died at 8 a.m. today at his home, 301 Hopkins Boulevard. He was taken ill July 19, 1951 when he suffered a stroke and has been under treatment at Biloxi Hospital and at his home. He has been seriously ill since Tuesday.

Mr. Lawrence was a lifelong Biloxian. He has been retired for the past 40 years. He formerly owned and operated the Guarantee Shoe Store, prior to which he worked for the city of Biloxi as a young man before going into the shoe business.

Mr. Lawrence became a stockholder of Peoples Bank in October 1902, was elected director Jan. 9, 1911, and has been vice president for 20 years. He had considerable real estate holdings and at one time was active in Biloxi Lodge of Elks.

Mr. Lawrence is survived by his wife, and two children. Mrs. Mary Coleman and Jos. V. Lawrence Jr., Biloxi, five grandchildren and several great grandchildren.

In the late 1880's Joseph Lawrence opened a shoe store in Biloxi. January 1920 he signed the store over to his son, Joseph, Jr. and son-in-law, James O. Coleman.
