John D. Haertel was born on August 4, 1937 in Elgin, IL, the son of Harold and Helen (Holtz) Haertel. He died on Tuesday, January 2, 2001 at the Avera McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls, SD at the age of 63 years.
    John received his education at Immanuel Lutheran School and Dundee High School in Dundee, IL and graduated form the University of Illinois, Urbana in 1962. He was united in marriage to Lois Steben in Hinsdale, IL on June 15, 1962. He taught school in Tolono, IL and later returned to school, completing his doctoral studies at Oregon State University, Corvallis in 1969. He was a professor in the Entomology-Zoology and Biology Departments at South Dakota State University, Brookings, SD from 1969 until his retirement in 1998. He enjoyed playing the organ at First Lutheran Church, where he was a member. He also enjoyed spending time with his family, horseback riding, kayaking and bird-banding.
    John is survived by his wife, Lois of Bruce, SD; two sons, Michael Haertel of Portland, OR and Patrick Haertel of Fort Collins, CO; and a brother, Tom Haertel of Dundee, IL.
    He was preceded in death by his parents; and a brother, Gene.
    Funeral services will be held on Saturday, January 6, 2001 at 10:30 AM at the First Lutheran Church, Brookings, SD. Rev. Scott Miller and Rev. James Thvedt officiating. Interment Tuesday, January 9, 2001 at 11 AM at Bronswood Cemetery, Hinsdale, IL. Visitation Friday from 4-8 PM at Rude's Funeral Home, Brookings, SD.
