Son of Henry J. Nienaber and Ruth B. Haferland. He attended Holy Family School and graduated in 1955, and attended Heavy Equipment School in Des Moines, Iowa, in 1957. He married Cleo A. Foltz, on May 27, 1961, in Lindsay at Holy Family Catholic Church. He lived in Columbus and Lindsay.

Donald was employed at HABCO Mfg., Cornhusker Power District, Loup Power District, and farmed with his wife from 1973 to 2003, on the Nienaber Family Farm. He had served on the Holy Family Church Parish Council, was past president of Holy Family Booster Club and past president of the Lindsay Optimist Club. He was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church and served as an EME.

Survivors include his wife, Cleo, of Lindsay; children and spouse: Mike (Joan) Nienaber, of Berthoud, Colo., Jodi (David) Fowlkes, of Newman Grove, Amy (Steve) Brockhaus, of Humphrey, Tim (Cindy) Nienaber, of Thornton, Colo., Tom Nienaber, of Gretna, David (Sara) Nienaber, of Gretna, and Brian (Brooke) Nienaber, of Gretna; 13 grandchildren; sister, Nancy (Donald) Borer, of Lindsay; brothers, Bernie (Mariette) Nienaber, of Phoenix, Ariz., Bill (Connie) Nienaber, of Lindsay, Les (Gloria) Nienaber, of Newman Grove; and sister-in-law, Donna Nienaber, of Orchard.

He was preceded in death by his parents; daughter, Mary Ruth; and brother, Pat.
