Mildred graduated from Gothenburg High School. On May 2, 1942, Mildred married Morse "Morey" Umshler. The couple made their home in Gothenburg and Loup City before eventually moving to Cozad in 1958. Their union was blessed with a daughter, Jan. While in Cozad, Mildred had been employed as a teller at First Bank and Trust for many years. Mildred loved attending auctions. She purchased countless antiques over the years, but she had a unique story that was associated with each piece. While she enjoyed antiques as a pastime, her passion was her family. Mildred always enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren; she didn't just attend their events, she was deeply involved in their lives. In 1994, Morey preceded Mildred in death. Mildred's most recent years had been spent at the Golden Living Center in Cozad, where the staff and friends were part of her family.
She had been a member of the First United Methodist Church for over 50 years. She was a member of the Golden Rod Antique Car Club.
In addition to her husband, Mildred was preceded in death by 3 brothers, Kenneth, Cecil and Clayton; sister, Ethel VanWay and her husband Ernest; and a sister-in-law, Colleen Axthelm.
Survivors include her daughter, Jan Nichols of Cozad; brothers, Glen Axthelm of North Platte and Nort Axthelm of Riverton, Wyo.; two grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren and a host of friends and relatives.
