Clara Ellen Arnold was born near New Philadelphia, Ohio, March 28, 1871, and fell asleep in Jesus Jan. 15, 1917. Her parents came to Salina, Kan., when she was only five years old and settled near New Cambria, where she underwent some of the hardships of pioneer life.
She became the wife of Asher Heller Sept. 18, 1892. She was a true helpmeet, the mother of one daughter, Nina, now a teacher at Luray, and two boys. She came from a large family of 16, only six of whom are alive.
They lived in Sylvan Grove for 20 years. Here she was a great helper among her neighbors; she was very strong and efficient to do all kinds of hard work; she was a good nurse in sickness, a good cook at the hotel or at weddings, and always where a strong, good help was needed she was called. She was so cheerful and willing.
She had only moved back to Lincoln 10 days before her death, but in those 10 days she returned a while to Sylvan Grove to help a sick woman and child. So she died in the harness.
Very many of her neighbors came from Sylvan Grove to her funeral at the home in Lincoln and to the First Presbyterian church here. Also her brother, David Arnold and wife of Salina, her brother, Edward and wife of Hutchinson; a sister, Lettie James of Oklahoma; a niece, Maud LaBenne of Salina; Robert and Clifford Arnold of Sylvan Grove.
Her body was laid to rest in the Lincoln Cemetery. God help her husband and dear children to endure till the light shall dawn on them in the better land.
