Mrs. Kate Guthrie Newman, 85, died May 26 at 6:30 p.m. after having lived in Collingsworth County for most of her life.
She came with her parents, the late Jerry and Alice Phipps when she was two years old. Her father was a leader in farming activities and church affairs for a long period of time.
Mrs. Newman had remained active until the end of her life.
Katherine Elizabeth Phipps was born January 18, 1897 in Jones County. She was affectionately known by many as Kate, or Aunt Kate.
She lived for many years at Cross Roads northwest of Wellington, rearing her family there, before coming into town to make her home.
Through her adult life, she had devoted much time to her church and as well as to her community and family, and among all of these she was much beloved.
She had been a member of the Primitive Baptist Church since 1922.
On December 9, 1917, she was married to Jerry Guthrie in Wellington. He died July 17, 1959. On June 5, 1964, she was married to Austin Newman, who preceded her in death October 12, 1964.
Mrs. Newman is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Bill Lee of Pampa and Mrs. Leonard James of El Paso; two sons, Dan Guthrie of Wellington and Jerry Guthrie of Guymon, OK; four sisters, Mrs. Mary Chandler of Wellington, Mrs. Julie Emmert of Shamrock, Mrs. Ruby Yeary of Floydada and Mrs. Augusta Aaron of Dallas; five brothers, Jack Phipps and Dudley Phipps of Wellington, Charlie Phipps of Friona, Jerry Phipps of Muleshoe and J.D. Phipps of Earth; 18 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren.
One son preceded her in death in 1920.
