Mrs. Mildred F. Smith, 92, of Brooklyn, IA, died Tuesday, October 14, 2003, at Brooklyn Community Estates, Brooklyn, IA.
Funeral services for Mrs. Smith were held at 11 AM Saturday, October 18, 2003, at the Nevenhoven Funeral Home, Brooklyn. Pastor John Reynolds Jr. of the First Presbyterian Church officiated. Casket-bearers were Kevin Smith, Diane Van Ersvelde, Todd Van Ersvelde, Craig Smith, Luke Smith, and Krystal Smith. Interment was in the Brooklyn Memorial Cemetery.
A memorial fund has been established.
Mildred Florence Melsa Smith was born November 21, 1910 on a farm near Chelsea, Iowa. Her parents were Frank Melsa and Frances Vavra Melsa.
She was a graduate of the Chelsea High School. On October 18, 1932, Mildred married Phillip Henry Smith at Rock Island, Illinois. They farmed near Marengo and Haven area south of Tama before moving to a farm near Brooklyn in 1940. They moved into Brooklyn 1973 following their retirement. Mr. Smith died Sept. 2, 1995.
Mrs. Smith was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, Brooklyn. She was a 50 year member of the Eastern Star and was a member of Holly Chapter #477 OES and a member of the Rebekah's.
Her parents; her husband; a son Dale; three brothers; three sisters; and a granddaughter Kathleen Smith preceded her in death.
Surviving are a daughter-in-law, Madonna Smith of Brooklyn; two grandchildren, Kevin Smith of Brooklyn and Diane Van Ersvelde and her husband Todd of North Liberty; and five great grandchildren, Craig, Luke, and Krystal Smith and Courtney and Nicole Van Ersvelde.
