Sept. 29, 1922 — Dec. 25, 2009
Mayme Lee Burgess, 87, formerly of Crossville, passed away on Friday, Dec. 25, 2009 at Sumner Regional Medical Center, Gallatin, TN of complications from pneumonia and congestive heart failure. A memorial service will be held at Smith's Chapel Church, west of Pleasant Hill, on Sunday, May 16, at 3 p.m. Visitation will begin at 2 p.m. with interment to follow the service in Smith's Chapel Cemetery.
Mrs. Burgess was born Sept. 29, 1922, in Eastland, TN, the daughter of the late William Kell Lewis and Josie Emmaline Edmonds Lewis.
A kind, loving mother and gentle grandmother, she is survived and sadly missed by her daughters, Ollie Jo Burgess-Gorham and husband Dr. Robin W. Gorham of Annandale, VA, and Frances Lee Gary and husband Dr. Todd Gary of Hendersonville, TN. She is also survived by three grandsons, Nathan (Tracy) Hubbard of San Diego, CA, David (Kavitha) Hubbard of Redondo Beach, CA, and Joseph Hubbard of Knoxville; three stepdaughters, Willana Williams, Evelyn Cox and Geneva Parmalee, all of Crossville; former son-in-law, Dr. Levonn Hubbard of Crossville; a brother, William Kell Lewis Jr. of St. Albans, WV; sisters-in-law, Maxine (Woods) Lewis of Gallatin, TN and Margie (Marlow) Lewis of Crossville; a special niece, Carolyn (Don) Holtz of Florahome, FL; and many other nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brothers, Eston Lewis, Stanford Earl "Mutt" Lewis, and James Murl Lewis; sisters, Nellie Cleo Cope, Zana Marie Anderson, and Mary Ellen Anderson; and her husband, Charles Frank Burgess.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be given to Habitat for Humanity, Crossville, or to an environmental charity, or to the charity of your choice.
