Anchorage resident KENT R. AUTOR, 69, died Feb. 5, 2003, at home. In accordance with his wishes, no service was held.
Mr. Autor was born July 11, 1933, in New York City to Hans and Karen Autor. After his parents moved to Anchorage in 1947, he spent many of his formative years as a young man in Alaska, working mainly in construction surveying. He received an honorable discharge after serving in the U.S. Army at Fort Richardson during the Korean conflict. Upon completing undergraduate studies at the University of British Columbia in 1959, he worked as a probation officer in Anchorage and the Matanuska Valley. After leaving the state to pursue graduate studies in North Carolina and Michigan, Mr. Autor returned to Alaska in 1974 and worked as a surveyor on construction of the trans-Alaska oil pipeline. He then pursued his profession in public services and founded a number of small businesses in Anchorage, including Alaska Health and Human Services Consulting, Ask-Alaska, Med-Write, and Harthaven Pet Cremation Services. He retired in 2002. In North Carolina during the 1960s, Mr. Autor was particularly active in the civil rights movement and in fighting poverty. In Alaska, he also worked with various charitable and civic organizations, including the March of Dimes and the Alaska Public Health Association. His family wrote: ''Kent dearly loved Alaska and its people. He will be remembered for his sense of humor and especially his compassion and generosity to others in need.''
He is survived by his wife, Mary; son and daughter-in-law, Erik and Ariadne Autor of Falls Church, Va.; son, Kurt Autor of Anchorage; daughter and son-in-law, Debra and Alan Downs of Chesapeake, Va.; daughter, Carey Odom of Anchorage; son-in-law, Bill Odom of Anchorage; six grandchildren, Christian and Alexander Autor, Kelly and Delaney Downs, and Brittany and Hilary Odom; his sons' mother, Dr. Anne Autor of Vancouver, B.C., Canada; and goddaughter, Jacqueline Nothstine Lee, and her family.
