My gg grandfather, Carl Ludwig Gustav Lehmann (aka "Carl" or "Gustav")was born March 14, 1825 at Landsberg an der Warthe, Prussia. Landsberg was located on the Warthe (Warta) River some 150 miles east of Berlin. It was a part of the Kingdom of Prussia, but is in modern times an area in Poland. Boundaries and town names changed over the years due to wars and other changes. The old location of the town of Landsberg an der Warthe is now Gorzow, Weilkopolski, Poland. Gustav and his 1st wife, Adelphine Louisa Frederike Sperling-Lehmann were my gg grandparents and their 2nd born son: Johann Maximilian Lehmann (aka "Max" or "John") and wife Sarah Ann Miller-Wallace-Lehmann were my great grandparents.

Gustav's Prussian family has yet to be discovered, but he apparently migrated at an early age to the area of Berlin. He was married to Adelfine Louise Friederike Sperling (born: ca 1826 we believe to be in Landsberg, but not sure). They were parents of at least two sons-- Paul Rudolph Lehmann (Paul and his line later dropping the double "n:" to Lehman) born on 23 May 1852/53 in Berlin, and Max, born in 09 March 9 1854/55, perhaps in the same area. Gustav was listed as Standing of "Schoenfaerber" when they applied for emigration to the U.S.

Gustav emigrated to the United States, ca. 1854 (Re: Brandenberg Immigration Lists shows Carl Ludwig Gustav Lehmann & wife Adelphine Louise Freiderike Sperling and son: Paul Rudolph Lehmann - but Gustav did not file his intent for U.S. citizenship until September,1859 in Calhoun County, Texas (living in Indianola, Tx upon his arrival). Our understanding is that typically one signed the intent when they arrived off the ship (touched our soil), so why would it take from 1854 Brandenberg Emigration List until 1859 (5 years) before he filed his citizenship intent is not known. He settled in the Old Town of Indianola, Calhoun Couty, Texas with the two boys. The wife and mother (Adelphine Louise Freidrike Sperling-Lehmann) likely died in Germany before they departed, on the voyage to America, or shortly after arrival in Texas and possibly died in child birth when Max was born (Max was likely not yet born in 1854 when they applied for emigration, so Adelphine must have been expecting Max at that time).

Gustav was a drayman and watchman for the Morgan Steamship Lines at Indianola. He married a woman named Wilhelmine (Schereligia - spelling?), at Indianola in June 11 1856. Gustav declared his intent for U.S. citizenship September 1, 1859 at Indianola. He was a member of Indianola's volunteer fire department. He was a musician and soldier during the Civil War. Gustav and Wilhelmine were blessed with a daughter, Auguste Lehmann on 18 December 1861. Auguste Lehmann married William Franke in Indianola on 16 August 1882 in Indianola, Texas and they had one child before Auguste Lehmann-Franke died just two days after the birth of a daughter, Katie Augusta Franke. Katie married a Jesse Chester LEE, Sr. on 27 Nov 1900 in Yoakum, DeWitt, Texas and had 5 children before they divorced. For a brief time she was married to an Oliver Lee "Leo" Rosenstiel in KS (who predeceased her) and had two Rosenstiel sons. But she returned to Cuero before she died and is buried in Hillside Cemetery and kept the LEE married name at her death).

Most towns in Texas had a militia, or home guard, and Indianola was no exception. When the Civil War began Gustav enlisted in the Confederate States Army at Indianola October 5, 1861 for a period of the War. His military record shows he was 38 years of age, stood 5 foot-10 inches, had blue eyes and brown hair and was of a light complexion. He was a private in Company B, 8th regiment of the Texas Infantry, CSA. He served as a musician and a rifleman. The 8th regiment was involved in several skirmishes in Texas and bordering states during the War. Indianola was captured by the Union Army in one of the few battles of the War that took place on Texas soil. The port was a strategic point in the gulf of Mexico from where the Union forces could control shipping activities.

Gustav was captured at Indianola May 4, 1864 and was sent to a detention facility at New Orleans, La. He was transferred to a detention facility at Shreveport, La., July 22, 1864 and exchanged at Red River Landing with prisioners held by Confederate forces. He was 41 years of age when he returned to his family at Indianola.

After returning from the war, life returned to normal until a hurricane destroyed Indianola in 1875. Over 400 people lost their lives, but the Lehmann family somehow survived. The homes and businesses were rebuilt, but in 1886 another hurricane swept through Indianola, again totally destroying the town. Their daughter, Augusta Lehmann-Franke, died 2 days after birth of her only child: Catherine "Katie" Auguste Franke. William Franke had at least two more marriages after his wife's death, but to our knowledge the only child actually born to him was Katie Auguste Franke-Lee-Rosenstiel (who changed her name back to first married name of LEE before she died).

Gustav and Wilhelmine relocated to Cuero after surviving the 1886 hurricane, joining their eldest son's family (Paul Rudolph Lehmann family) who had moved there prior to 1880.

Carl Ludwig Gustav Lehmann died May 17, 1892 at Cuero, DeWitt county, Texas and is is buried in the Lehmann Family Plot at Hillside Cemetery (dbl headstone with his 2nd wife Wilhelmine). A marble tombstone marks the grave with inscriptions etched in German language. The tombstone identifies his birthplace as Landsberg an der Warthe, Prussia.

Carl Ludwig Gustav Lehmann (Death notice 1892):
A notice in the Victoria Advocate May 21, 1892 contained this information:
" Mr. Gustav Lehmann who was buried yesterday was an old citizen and an excellent man . Many years ago he was a watchman for the Morgan Line at Indianola where he was held in the highest esteem."

Gustav's 2nd wife (Wilhemine, born in Hamberg, Germany-maiden name unknown because the newly found marriage license is obviously misspelled as Scheregila and there is no such surname) is buried next to him. We've acquired their birthdates and place of birth from their tombstones, but have not yet found their official birth or baptism records from Prussia/Poland/Germany for them or the Sperling family records or marriages on his 1st wife.

Wilhelmine Scheregila (sp?)- Lehmann ancestors are not yet known. She was second wife of Gustav Lehmann. Her birthplace was Hamburg, Germany, but she migrated to the United States and Texas, living first at Yorktown, a German settlement in DeWitt County, Texas. She and Gustav were married on June 11, 1856 at Indianola, Calhoun County, Texas. They were parents of a daughter, Auguste Lehmann, who was born in 18 December 1861. They were members of the Lutheran church.

Gustav and Wilhelmine moved to Cuero from Indianola in 1886, following the last hurricane that destroyed Indianola. Wilhelmine died January 19, 1901. She is buried in Hillside Cemetery at Cuero. A marble tombstone marking the grave of Gustav and Wilhelmine identifies her birthplace a Hamburg, Germany.

Wilhelmine Lehmann's obituary appeared in the Cuero Record (January 1901) with the following notations:

"Mrs. Wilhelmine Lehmann, stepmother of Paul and Max Lehmann, died in this city yesterday morning at 10:30 o'clock at the advanced age of 77 years and will be buried this afternoon at 3 o'clock from the residence of her son, Paul. All friends and acquaintances are invited to attend the funeral. Mrs. Lehmann had lived in Texas nearly a half-century, at first in Yorktown, then in Indianola until the 1875 storm, and since in Cuero. She leaves a long list of friends to mourn her death."

Note on above Obituary: There was no mention of her daughter Auguste Lehmann-Franke who predeceased her in 1883, nor any mention of her living granddaughter (daughter of Auguste Lehmann-Franke & William Franke marriage, being: Katie Auguste Franke).

Carl Ludwig Gustav Lehmann served 3 years and 8 months in the Company "B", 8th Regiment, Texas Infantry. Retired from Morgan Steamship Lines. In 1899, Wilhemine Lehmann got an approved Confederate Pension.

Notes on Lansberg an der Warthe, Prussia:
My cousin who lives in Guthrie, OK had communication some time ago with a life-long resident of Gorzow,
Poland (previously Landsberg an der Warthe, Prussia) and has been told that the city population is now about 300,000. A friend of his who works at the courthouse says there are no early records of German existance there.
Most records were taken back to Germany or were destroyed by the Russians. He says the wars that changed boundaries caused most of the Germans to leave after it became Poland. What Germans that were left in the region
left when the Russians occupied Poland after WWII. He says there is not even a Lutheran church in the city anymore.

RECENT RESEARCH NOTES: (APRIL 2010)

Finally found a marriage license recorded in Indianola, Calhoun County, Texas for Gustav Lehmann and his 2nd marriage Wilhemine Scheregila (sp?). The names are misspelled Gustave Sehmann and Wilhelmina Scheregila married on June 11, 1856. Wilhemine's Civil War pension application stated she was married on June 9, 1856. We did not find the record for the marriage until 2010 due to the misspelling (actually transcribed last name wrong: Gustav "S"ehmann versus "L"ehmann. We think that Wilhemina's last name is spelled incorrectly (possibly phoenetically) as we cannot find any such surname as "Scheregila". There were two witnesses to the marriage: Ernest Witnebert and August Grosman. We have found info on Ernest Wittnebert family and communicated with one of his descendents recently but have not yet found the family connection yet and have not yet found anything on the other witness: August Grosman.
