Louise Gatens, 81, of Cedar Rapids, died Tuesday, March 13, 2007, in her home after a long illness. Services: 10 a.m. Saturday, Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, by the Rev. Gerald Condon. Burial: Mount Calvary Cemetery. A rosary will be held at 6:30 tonight at Teahen Funeral Home where friends may visit from 4 to 7 p.m. today and 8:30 to 9:15 a.m. Saturday.

She was preceded in death by her parents; stepfather, C Wilmer Cochran; and sister-in-law, Gaylene Lowder.

Louise was born Feb. 11 1926, in Keswick, in the home of her parents, Walter and Mabel (Rank) Rickman. She graduated from Keswick High School in 1943 and married Paul James Gatens Jr. on Sept. 10, 1949, at Immaculate Conception Church in Cedar Rapids. She was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church. Louise made custom draperies for Smulekoff's, Ethan Allen and Kenwood House for many years.Louise was a very caring wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.Louise and Paul celebrated 57 years of marriage in September 2006. She was a homemaker who took great pride in raising her six children and enjoyed playing bingo and working crossword and jigsaw puzzles. Her most-enjoyed pastime was the many hours of playing games with her kids and grandkids. A favorite pastime for Louise and Paul was to dance to the Big Bands. Louise and Paul were avid bowlers, enjoying the many friendships made through the mixed couples leagues.

Our family wishes to extend a special thank you to Louise's cousin, Anita LeGrand, for her special care and support. Our gratitude and thanks also goes to Hospice of Mercy for the exceptional care and compassion shown to Louise and her family.

Instead of flowers, the family requests memorials be directed to the Dennis and Donna Oldorf Hospice House of Mercy in Cedar Rapids.
